Donegal County Council has been asked to put extra pressure on the Minister for Justice and the Courts Service to fast track repairs on Carndonagh Courthouse.
The courthouse was closed in March due to health and safety issues and all cases were transferred to Buncrana.
But the move has had legal and economic implications on the town of Carndonagh, according to local Cllr Albert Doherty.
Cllr Doherty told Donegal County Council that the legal service is eager to see refurbishment works carried at the earliest opportunity.
He said that Carndonagh has been negatively impacted by the knock-on effect of the closure:
“The businesses that serve food and look after the legal people – they value the benefits that a court day in Carndonagh can bring. It’s an economic day as well,” Cllr Doherty said.
Cllr Doherty also questioned the spend on general maintenance works at the courthouse. He asked for the council to write to the Courts Service and the Minister for Justice to fast track the carrying out of a structural survey on the courthouse to allow for its restoration.
