The Donegal-based No Barriers Foundation will mark National Fitness Day with an inaugural conference on the theme of staying active with a disability.
This September 26th, the non-profit group will host a free evening event to raise awareness of exercise for disability rehabilitation and the options that are available locally.
The conference will feature guest speakers and will include a demonstration of the No Barriers Exoskeleton – a specialist device which enables people with spinal injury, stroke, MS, and brain injury, amongst others, to stand up and walk.
Guest Speakers are:
- Dr Mark Hogan (Community Neurological Rehabilitation Team)
– The importance of exercise for mental health - Dr Frank Fogarty (No Barriers Foundation)
– The Role of the Exoskeleton in Neurological Rehabilitation - Adaptive Adventurer and Motivational Speaker Nikki Bradley
– My Story: Getting active with a disability
Looking ahead to the conference, No Barriers Services Coordinator and Physiotherapist Stephen Mc Nally said: “The goal of this event is to connect and serve our local communities here in Donegal, and to provide a means of awareness to the emerging technologies, mental health and exercise for disability rehabilitation.
“This event will be an opportunity for all of us connect with those within the community who need access to these services as well as other organisations with the same goal as ours and that is the creation of an all-inclusive healthcare rehabilitation facility with access to all in Donegal and surrounding counties.
“We are expecting individuals from varying backgrounds and from every corner of the county and others seeking to gain knowledge as to what is offered here in Donegal and indeed the North West.”
The conference begins at 6pm in the Community Inclusion Hub, Kilmacrennan Road, Letterkenny. Tea/coffee and sandwiches will be provided. All welcome.
