Why is anxiety and depression still on the rise in Donegal and across the world?
Well, a lot of it has to do with how we all react to life around us, in particular to times when life gets tougher – when it doesn’t go the way we wanted.
In many ways, we are better off than the last generation. We have more luxuries. We have more leisure time and in many cases, we have more money.
But technology has become more embedded in our lives and our attentions are being pulled in all directions. We have become much more passive with our physical health. This all means that more people are finding “living” more challenging.
Jim White, a clinical psychologist in Glasgow recognised this fact back in the 1980s and decided to do something about. He put together a simple programme to help people learn all they need to know about “stress” – how it affects them and what strategies they can learn to manage their stress and have a happier life.
This programme became hugely successful and spread throughout Scotland. And now 35 years on it is being delivered all over the world.
Donegal Mind Wellness has been running the programme in County Donegal for the past 5 years and to date over 6,000 people have completed the course.
Participants love the fact that they don’t have to speak or do any role plays. They just sit and listen and then get a book at the end of the night. The programme was evaluated recently in Inishowen with very positive results. Most people recorded that their stress levels had reduced significantly from having done the course.
This is a great time of year to do a course with the dark winter nights approaching and let’s face it – Christmas is just over the horizon, so why not come along to Stress Control and learn a little more about how to keep your stress levels in check.
