THERE WAS shock in local soccer circles today following the withdrawal of Fanad United from the Donegal Youth League.
Fanad were champions of the Youth League most recently in the 2017/18 season, with the title secured in April 2018 – just 16 months ago.
In a brief statement, posted on the club’s Facebook page earlier today, the Traigh-A-Loch club said that ‘certain factors have arisen, which we are keeping in house, that have made it impossible for us to continue to field a team this season.’
Fanad informed League officials of their decision this morning.
The Fanad United statement read:
“It’s with deep regret that we have informed the League this morning that we will be withdrawing from the Youth League with immediate affect.
“Certain factors have arisen, which we are keeping in house, that have made it impossible for us to continue to field a team this season. It wasn’t an easy decision to make.
“We would like to say a massive thanks to all the players who played this season, they were a credit to the club. Also a huge thanks to our coaching staff of Niall Doherty, Shaun Dorrian and Packie McElwaine.
“We would also like to thank the Donegal Schoolboy and Youth League for their understanding and respecting our decision. And apologise for the inconvenience caused. We wish them all the best for the rest of the season.”
