SEAN MCGOLDRICK suffered the first defeat of his professional career last night in Liverpool.
The 27-year-old was beaten for the WBA Continental Bantamweight title by Thomas Essomba at the Exhibition Centre in Liveprool.
Newport-born McGoldrick, whose father Liam is from Ballyshannon, drops to 9-1 as a pro after he was beaten 98-93, 97-93, 96-94 after ten rounds.
Essomba shocked McGoldrick in the Sky Sports-screened bout, with McGoldrick cut to his left eye after the mid-point.
Essomba – who entered this fight on the back of two defeats – improved his record to 9-5 after an aggressive performance was enough to topple McGoldrick’s previously unbeaten record.
