Joy for Morris and Voss at Irish Downhill Mountain Bike Championship

Rostrevor in County Down was the venue for the Irish Downhill Mountain Bike Championship at the weekend with Donegal town’s Adam Voss and Clonmany’s Callum Morris both in action.

Heavy rain on Friday had made conditions very difficult for Saturday’s practise with some newly-built sections on the very steep Kilbroney forest track.

Both riders were taking it easy to get used to it but as it dried they could push on and find their limits.

Practise finished prematurely for the Inishowen rider Morris (pictured above) with a broken frame so the team had a bit of work to do for race day.

Using his brother Aaron’s bike they rebuilt it to suit Callum. With only a few hours on Sunday to get used to the new set up the youngster made some adjustments and was soon back up to speed.

He qualified second on his seeding run then found another 2.5 seconds on his race run winning the under 14 category and lifted his second Irish title of the year.

Adam had moved from the sports category to the seniors for the championships and was happy enough after his practise runs but he knew he had his work cut out if he was going to make any impact on the very competitive group of riders.

This he did taking an excellent 10th place mixing it with a host of top class riders.

There was the added bonus of some great Donegal support for both riders, several members from Adam’s Tir Chonaill Gap Cycling Club had made the trip to watch what turned out a brilliant event.
