The Emergency Department at Letterkenny University Hospital is extremely busy today as staff deal with a high number of patients waiting on beds.
A public warning has been issued advising patients to only attend the ED in “the case of real emergencies”.
Some patients are experiencing long waiting times in the department as staff treat people presenting to the ED in order of medical priority.
A statement from the Saolta Hospital group said that Letterkenny University Hospital admitted a significant number of ill patients recently, many of whom remain in the Emergency Department awaiting a bed. This is due to high attendances at the ED over the weekend with many sick elderly patients presenting.
The statement asks the public to attend the Emergency Department only in the case of real emergencies and they should contact their GP or GP Out-of-Hours service in the first instance.
The INMO Trolley Watch report from LUH this morning registered 24 sick patients waiting on beds.
