Gardai have warned the public over the illegal use of set-top boxes, known as ‘dodgy boxes’, which are without legitimate subscriptions from service providers.
It comes as Gardai in Cork conducted a major operation targeting the use of fake set-top boxes.
Detectives believe that up to 20,000 people nationwide are using the fraudulent boxes.
The fraud being investigated is estimated to be worth up to €20m annually.
Gardai were assisted by representatives from Sky and Virgin Media during the operation.
