Frank McBrearty claims that he has evidence relating to the person responsible for the death of Raphoe cattle dealer Richie Barron.
McBrearty, a Donegal County Councillor, said he has evidence of who was driving the car that killed Mr Barron in 1996. According to the Sunday Times, McBrearty showed this evidence to Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan last year.
Cllr McBrearty and his cousin, Mark McConnell, were wrongly accused of murdering Mr Barron in 1996. It was later ruled he was the victim of a hit-and-run. Following the Morris Tribunal in 2005, McBrearty received €1.5m in compensation from the Gardaí over the wrongful arrest, malicious prosecution and breaches of his constitutional rights.
Cllr McBrearty told The Times that he wants Minister Flanagan to tell Richie Barron’s family that his family are innocent. He said that he wants to ensure that someone is prosecuted over the hit-and-run.
Cllr McBreaty was elected as Mayor of the Lifford-Stranorlar district this month. He was elected to the council as a Fine Gael candidate in May, but he left the party a week later to become an Independent Councillor.
