KATY HERRON praised Donegal’s new stars after they prevailed in a titanic Ulster semi-final joust with Cavan.
Donegal defeated the Breffni 0-24 to 2-13 after extra time in Killyclogher on Saturday night.
After a winter of big change in the Donegal squad, Maxi Curran’s side has come back with a real bit between their teeth again.
“For the older girls, so many have left the panel, it’s massive that we take charge and show the younger girls what it’s about,” Herron told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.
“They’ve not played on days like this, but you couldn’t tell a minor from a senior there.
“Cavan came out and gave it everything they could. They came at us time and time again. Our girls stood up so tall and some of the turnovers were unreal.
“It was a titanic battle and could have went either way.”
Donegal were five points down late in normal time, but they reeled Cavan in and, inspired by Geraldine McLaughlin, kicked for home in extra time.
Herron said: “There was a lot happening there, 14 on the field, 13 on the field. We had a lot to do and really had to dig deep. The composure really showed through.
“We settled the heads and I’m so proud of the girls. Everyone worked brilliantly as a unit and it was just super.”
