Independent Cllr John O’Donnell has been officially elected as Mayor of the Letterkenny-Milford electoral area.
The Kilmacrennan councillor took over the chain of office from outgoing chairman Ian McGarvey at today’s AGM in Letterkenny.
Cllr John O’Donnell was formally proposed as Mayor by Independent Cllr Kevin Bradley.
Cllr O’Donnell seconded the proposal himself.
There was some uncertainty about the election earlier after no-one came forward to second Cllr Bradley’s initial proposal.
The meeting was adjourned for 15 minutes before councillors resumed proceedings and eventually elected Cllr O’Donnell.
With 1,959 first preference votes, Cllr O’Donnell was the first councillor to be elected in the May 2019 elections and topped the poll in Milford.
Speaking at the AGM, Cllr O’Donnell said: “I am absolutely honoured to be elected as Mayor of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District. I think it’s very important include Milford in the Letterkenny district as well, the fact that we can work together here.
“I look forward to acting and working with you as Mayor for the next 12 months.”
He thanked Cllr Kevin Bradley for putting his name forward for the position.
Cllr O’Donnell added: “Any members here that are looking for any support in the next 12 months, by phone will be always on and the door always open for yourselves. to try and support you and bring forward any emergency motions in front of this municipal district and to ensure we are working as hard as we can for the betterment of the Letterkenny-Milford electoral area.”
