Gardai drafted in to manage Letterkenny’s traffic congestion

Gardai have been drafted in to manage Letterkenny’s traffic congestion.

And it appears that the plan is working.

This picture, taken at the bottom of Convent Road (Back Road) just after 4pm, shows traffic flowing freely.

Yesterday between 4.30pm and 6pm traffic was congested across the town with many five minutes journeys taking up to an hour.

Motorists are up in arms because of the times being added to their journeys.

Local councillors have expressed their concern over the traffic gridlock which is coming about because of necessary sewerage upgrade works at Pearse Road.

The new approach will see Gardai monitor traffic at key points in the Cathedral Town to keep it moving between the hours of 3pm and 7pm.

One motorist said “This could be the answer. The Gardai are managing the traffic now and not just stopping and starting it.

“No harm to the lads working for the construction company but they were not really helping matters. Gardai have the power to manage the traffic and hopefully we will see fewer tailbacks from now on.”

The plan appears to be working with a relatively traffic-free Back Roa din Letterkenny just after 4pm today.
