Newly elected Fine Gael county councillor Frank McBrearty is on the verge of quitting the party, according to sources close to the Raphoe man.
McBrearty was elected to the Stranorlar Municipal District Authority just three days ago.
The 50-year old is blaming internal pressure and claims he is being ‘bullied’ by other members of the party.
He has told sources that he is seriously considering quitting the party.
The source told Donegal Daily that McBrearty is also considering co-opting his wife onto the council.
McBrearty was an Independent councillor but stood for Fine Gael in the latest election.
The source said “Frank wanted to come in and work hard for his community and for Fine Gael. But he claims that certain sections of the party are doing their damndest to work against him.
“He claims there is a personal campaign to force him out of the party and he said he simply cannot work with Fine Gael under these conditions.
“He wants to quit and will make his decision shortly. He just doesn’t want to work with people who are working against him.”
