Galf Chumann Ghaoth Dobhair on a bright May morning was the scene for Captain John Bosco Gallagher’s prize and the culmination of the 2018-19 ETB Golf Society season.
The absence of leader Enda Mannion on the day left the door ajar for a number of others to stake their claim to be crowned Golfer of the Year, while the race for the ‘Magnificent 7’ signature hole trophy was also up for grabs.
Cometh the hour, cometh the woman as long time Society member and incoming Captain for next season, Deirdre O’Toole saw off strong challenges from Alex Harkin and Tommy Greally to claim victory on the day with 37 pts and with it also, the title of Golfer of the Year.
This is the first time that Deirdre has won the prestigious title and, in her winning speech, she spoke of how delighted she was to come out on top.
Congratulations to Deirdre, a very fine Golfer and a stalwart of the Society for many years and commiserations to this year’s runner up, Enda on being pipped at the post in his absence after a fine season also.
The MaryAnn Kane Memorial Trophy for the best cumulative score from seven signature holes from this season’s roster was won by Tommy Greally who won on a break of tie from Mr Society, Jim McGlynn with Rory White in third place. This again was a fine effort from Tommy and highlights his consistency and he is fast becoming a regular in the winners enclosure of the Society.
Second place on the day behind Deirdre was our Captain himself, John Bosco Gallagher, with 36pts followed by Tommy Greally 34 pts b.o.t. with Rory White 34 pts completing the top four. Alex Harkin with 32pts won the Past Captain’s prize, Jim McGlynn picked up the Category IV prize with 30pts, Eamon McDonnell on 29 pts won the Retired Members’ prize while Ciaran Rodgers and Paddy McDaid won the two ‘Best 9’ prizes. Mr Pat McGrath, father-in-law of our Captain, won the Guest prize on 32pts.
After a very nice meal and the presentation of prizes, John Bosco thanked everyone for coming and for all the help he received during his year as Captain.
Our dearly departed Society Members, Michael, Dessie and Danny were fondly remembered and it was nice that John Bosco’s wife Mary, his parents-in-law, Pat and Mary and his sister, Kathleen were able to join us on the day. Finally, John Bosco wished Deirdre O’Toole well in her in-coming year as Captain.
