Independent councillor Ian McGarvey has taken the third seat in Milford.
The former Letterkenny councillor and Mayor claimed the third and final place after a hotly-contested vote in the area.
Speaking to Donegal Daily, he said his campaign was based on his love of helping his community.
“I look forward to this day and the sooner this day comes and goes the better.
“You do a lot of work and you are depending on the small team you have around you.
“You are basing your campaign on the amount of work you’ve done for people in the past. It has always been a pleasure to assist people in difficulty.”
As McGarvey will turn 89 years of age this July, he will also be keeping his title as Ireland’s oldest elected representative.
He said: “Age should not be a barrier to people and I had to prove that to myself. I want to contribute as long as I’m able. If I retired what would I do? I would have been away dancing if this wasn’t on.”
Later in his speech, McGarvey said that he is looking forward to the next election!
McGarvey’s re-election means that Fine Gael have lost out on a place in the Milford area.
In her defeat, Eimer Friel (FG) congratulated the elected candidates and said: “I want to thank every single person who voted for me, my wonderful campaign team who walked the laneways with me over the past few weeks.”
The Fanad woman said she will continue her work at Minister Joe McHugh’s Constituency Office.
