An outpatient phototherapy service will be up and running at Letterkenny University Hospital in the coming weeks.
The news has been welcomed by Donegal County Councillor, Ciaran Brogan.
Phototherapy is a treatment option using Ultraviolet light, administered on the referral from a consultant dermatologist.
It is an effective method of treating many skin conditions, the most common of which is psoriasis.
“For far too long people have had to travel to Sligo Hospital and Altnagevlin Hospital for phototherapy, so this is great news for the patients affected,” said Cllr Brogan who is a member of the HSE Regional Health Forum.
“I welcome the investment by the HSE in this area. I have been informed that the phototherapy equipment has arrived at Letterkenny University Hospital. Staff training is currently underway and guidelines are being developed,” he added.
“It is hoped that the pre-phototherapy skin assessments will take place at the end of May or at the beginning of June, with patients receiving full phototherapy treatment before the end of June. A clinical nurse specialist and two other nurses have been recruited to staff the new service.”
The new outpatient service at Letterkenny University Hospital is being provided as part of a Cooperation and Working Together (CAWT) Funding Cross-Border Project.
