Darren McElwaine feels the buzz of winning silverware again was ‘just rewards’ for Letterkenny Rovers in yesterday’s Donegal News USL League Cup final.
Rovers overcame Cockhill Celtic 3-1 in the final at Finn Park – bringing to an end Cockhill’s seven-season dominance of USL competition.
“It’s brilliant,” McElwaine, Rovers’ joint captain with Conor Tourish, told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub afterwards.
“You work all year, you train for it. There are only four trophies you can win and we were down to one.
“The reward now is going into the dressing room and that buzz, talking about it. It’s just rewards for a hard year’s work.”
Lee Toland had Letterkenny ahead in the first half from a penalty, but Jimmy Bradley’s equaliser on 71 minutes evened the score before BJ Banda hit two goals late in the game.
McElwaine said: “There is nothing between those teams this last few years. They pipped us in the League a few times, fair play to them. These are the games you enjoy. It’s a battle against Cockhill.
“We rode our luck at times, but there are times I’ve played very well against Cockhill and got nothing.”
