The iconic Fanad Lighthouse of Donegal will be opening its doors for the 2019 season this Saturday 13th April.
The popular tourist destination will be hosting guided tours six days a week, giving visitors the opportunity to discover the history of the lighthouse and climb the tower for spectacular views of land and sea.
Fanad Lighthouse, one of the Great Lighthouses of Ireland and a Signature Discovery Point on the Wild Atlantic Way, recorded visitor numbers of 23,000 last year.
Since opening to the public in 2016, this working lighthouse has helped drive tourism to the Fanad peninsula, an area with much to offer visitors – such as the stunning Ballymastocker beach and Knockalla coast drive.
And there’s even more to discover on site this year, with a new visitor centre, craft shop, car park and a café serving barista coffees, teas and local home-baking.
Fanad Lighthouse is one of only two lighthouses on the Great Lighthouses of Ireland trail that offer both guided tours and accommodation.
For locals and tourists alike, the chance to visit the lighthouse for a guided tour and to climb to the top of the tower for spectacular views over land and sea is a memorable experience. There are three restored light-keepers’ cottages at the lighthouse and these are available to rent all year round. (See www.fanadlighthouse.com).

What’s on at Fanad Lighthouse in 2019?
Highlights of the 2019 season at Fanad will include the Shine a Light on Summer Festival on Saturday May 4th. This is an annual festival which runs in conjunction with Great Lighthouses of Ireland and a number of Irish lighthouses will take part, providing a range of family-friendly activities.
Fanad Lighthouse will also take part in Heritage Week in August, particularly for Wild Child Day on Wednesday 21 August, which encourages ‘kids and families to drop the devices, jump off the couch and get outdoors’.
‘Fright at the Light’ which was a great success last year will also return for Halloween this year.
This year, Fanad Lighthouse will become the Ionad Seirbhísí Pobail for the Fanad Gaeltacht, serving as a base for the local Irish-speaking community.
