A contractor has been appointed to construct the €2.5m Donegal Town Garda Station.
Boyle Construction will be the main contractors for the building which has received a widespread welcome.
Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher has welcomed the appointment of contractors for the upgrading and refurbishment works.
It is expected that works will commence shortly after Easter on the building.
The redevelopment contract for the station is to consist of the demolition of a two-storey extension and an adjoining storage shed along with internal and external alterations to the existing building.
The construction of a new three-storey extension to provide the additional extra capacity requirement for the station forms the main part of the contract, as the present Garda Station is grossly overcrowded at present.
Pat the Cope added these works are greatly needed at the station and are long overdue.
He said “I have raised this matter on numerous occasions with the Minister for Justice and I have constantly raised the issue directly with the Department by way of parliamentary questions.
“With the appointment of a contractor, it is expected to see works underway without any delay, temporary accommodation has already been arranged for the Garda Station while works are underway.
“The upgrading of our Garda stations is essential as the need to have a comprehensive and modern-day facility is a basic requirement for modern day policing.”
