The Ulster Senior League have tonight confirmed the withdrawal of Swilly Rovers.
Swilly had claimed just one point during a difficult season for the Ramelton club, who saw Tony McNamee step down as manager earlier this year.
Swilly had shipped some heavy defeats and Sunday’s 11-0 home loss to Finn Harps Reserves was the final straw.
Swilly were winners of the USL in the 1999/2000 season, but endured a troubled spell since back-to-back Knockalla Caravans Senior Cup wins in 2013 and 2014.
A statement from the Ulster Senior League said:
“Swilly Rovers have tonight informed the executive committee of the Ulster Senior League that, following a club meeting, they have decided to withdraw from the League.
Swilly Rovers were one of the founder clubs of the Ulster Senior League in 1986 and the League is disappointed by this outcome.
The Ulster Senior League committee remain committed to retaining and providing intermediate football in Donegal.”
Swilly’s decision, taken at a club committee meeting, means the Ulster Senior League has six competing teams: Cockhill Celtic, Derry City Reserves, Fanad United, Finn Harps Reserves, Letterkenny Rovers.
