The need for the funding of Buncrana Leisure Centre will be raised once again today at the monthly sitting of Donegal County Council.
Cllr Jack Murray has confirmed that he will be raising the need for the development of leisure centre facilities in Donegal. The call for a swimming pool in his constituency of Inishowen is expected to be a top priority.
Speaking in advance of the meeting, Cllr Murray said; “For far, far too long, the people of Inishowen have been without a leisure centre in the peninsula.
“A generation is growing up without learning to swim. We are deprived of a vital community facility and patience has long worn out.
“During my term as Mayor of Inishowen, I organised a meeting of all nine Inishowen county councillors and the leisure centre committee, where it was agreed – on a cross-party basis – that we would support the necessary funding being made up by the council.
“Similarly, I proposed in Lifford that this funding be released. This was also unanimously supported.
“Despite these positive agreements at a political level though, the wait has continued.
“So, I will move a motion at our council meeting, once again seek support from my council colleagues, demand that all obstacles are overcome and a funding package agreed.
“The 40,000 people of Inishowen deserve, and are entitled to; a leisure centre facility like those in other parts of Ireland would take for granted.”
