Philomena Canning – a pioneering midwife who championed the rights of pregnant women – has died.
The 59-year-old passed away last night following a serious illness.
Funeral details in full for services in Sandymount, Dublin on Monday and Glenvar, Donegal on Tuesday will be announced later.

The Philomena Canning Campaign posted a tribute to Ms Canning on Saturday.
A public Facebook message posted by the school said: “R.I.P. Sarah Philomena Canning midwife, warrior, queen. We will hold you forever in our hearts and cherish the gifts you gave us.”
Earlier this month Canning, who was seriously ill with terminal cancer, settled her case with the HSE.
The Glenvar woman had a case outstanding with the HSE over the withdrawal of her indemnity insurance to practise as a midwife in 2014.
Ms Canning worked as an independent midwife for over three decades and attended over 500 home births in Ireland.
