A total of six people have been arrested in Donegal over the St Patrick’s Weekend on suspicion of drink-driving.
One of these people also showed a positive reading for cocaine.
The figures have been released by local Gardai as they continue to crack down on a rising number of people getting behind the wheel with drink taken.
Earlier this week Donegal Daily revealed how driving offences in the first two months of this year were all significantly up compared to the same period last year.
These include drink-driving, the non-wearing of seatbelts and the use of mobile phone while driving.
On the eve of St Patrick’s Weekend, the head of the Traffic Corps in Donegal, Inspector Michael Harrison pleaded with people to be sensible.
A local Garda spokesman said “In the past 36 hours, 6 people have been arrested in Donegal on suspicion of Driving whilst Intoxicated, one also showed positive for cocaine.
“If you’re out and about tonight then enjoy yourself but please do not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”
