The North West will mark the end of the Spanish Civil War with a commemorative event to the north-west international volunteers who travelled from Donegal, Tyrone and Derry during the Spanish Civil War.
The event will take place at the North West International Brigades plaque at Unite the Union building on Carlisle Road, Derry on Saturday 30th March.
Nearly two hundred and fifty volunteers from ‘all walks of life’ on the island of Ireland served in the International Brigades between 1936-39 to fight against General Franco’s military rebellion.
Over twenty volunteers born in the North West of Ireland were convinced to travel to Spain and fight on the side of the democratically elected Republican government against Franco.
Nine volunteered from County Derry, nine from County Donegal and four from County Tyrone.
The North Spanish Civil War Project are planning to have an exhibition on the day at the Unite Building which will also include music.
Several relatives of north-west brigadistas will also be in attendance for this event with a number of trade union speakers from the Derry Trades Union Council.
The event will begin promptly at 1pm Saturday 30th March.
