Safety study for dangerous corner following accident

New safety measures are being sought for a dangerous bend in Glenswilly following a recent accident.

Concerns were raised about the narrow corner from Tullyhullion to Kilpheak after a car struck a wall while trying to avoid another vehicle.

Cllr Glackin told the Letterkenny Municipal District that the accident highlighted legitimate concerns surrounding this section of road leading towards St Columba’s Church.

He said: “There is no room for two cars to pass here and this is leading to evasive action.

“This happened where two cars met and one car pulled in and hit a wall. It was lucky on this occasion that there was nobody hurt.”

Cllr Glackin said legitimate concerns have been raised locally as the road is used often by people out walking and jogging. He added that he believed the issue could be a quick fix with safety signage.

The Letterkenny Roads Department confirmed that a Safety Engineer will be asked to assess the location to find out if it may be eligible for low cost accident funding. Area Manager Fergal Doherty said that signage options will be explored if the corner is deemed unlikely to be eligible for funding.
