Well-known local man Cyril Brennan has been selected to run for People Before Profit in the upcoming local and European elections.
A native of Ballyshannon, Cyril lives with his wife and two daughters in Ballyshannon where he also works as a health care worker in the Sheil Hospital.
In a statement he said, “I’m delighted to be selected to represent people before profit in both the locals and European elections this coming may, the North West and the Midlands has been continuously neglected by the current policies that prioritise big business over local communities.
“In my own area in particular in South Donegal we have been disconnected from politics at a national level with boundary changes that sees South Donegal stuck between 2 areas, at local level we are represented by Donegal County Council and on a National level our TDs are based in Sligo-Leitrim, many people in the area have become disengaged with politics as so many promises has been made in the past that the hope of change is dwindling”
Cyril’s sees his activism as very much part of the radical anti-establishment tradition in Donegal.
He took up politics in the wake of the devastation caused by a decade of austerity and has been a key driver of people power politics in the North West more generally.
Locally, Cyril will campaign for democratic accountability, rural regeneration, recycling facilities and public housing on public land. Nationally, he is chairman of the Still Waiting Health Campaign that brings together healthcare workers, political parties, trade unionists and patients to fight for a national health care system free at the point of use.
Living just 1 miles from the border, Cyril is acutely aware of the potential damage that a Tory Brexit will cause and he stands with local communities in their total opposition to any hardening of the border.
Unlike other parties, Cyril says People Before Profit openly advocate a campaign of civil disobedience to stop the installation of border posts as peace and democracy must come before the rules of EU markets.
He Concluded, “I aim to use the election platforms to give people hope and to show that there is someone speaking up for their concerns, technology and society is rapidly changing and the advancement being made in these areas need to be felt by ordinary people in every community not just by multinationals”.
He added that a vote for him will be a vote for someone who will expose the corporate dominance at the heart of Europe and will put the blame for our current problems where it belongs – at the top of society. Cyril will also work tirelessly to build the kind of people power movements that can transform society in the interests of workers, women, minorities and the environment.
