A GROUP of some 30 terrorists are using Donegal as a base to launch a new terror campaign, security sources in the North have warned.
And there are growing fears at what some senior officials in the PSNI perceive as a “lack of focus” in the Republic on what they say is the real threat to peace in Northern Ireland.
The Irish Sun reports that a lack of Garda manpower along the Donegal border is a real fear among local members but their hands are tied.
It follows an ammunition and mortar tube find in Co Louth in recent days and comments warning of a security threat in Louth, Cavan and Monaghan.
However, senior British security sources say only the New IRA in Derry currently present a threat to life.
“And its leaders and foot soldiers are using East Donegal to launch those attacks.”
They added: “The vast majority of planned terrorist incidents are disrupted by a uniformed police presence on the ground. We aren’t seeing enough of that in Donegal. It’s as if Derry doesn’t exist.”
