The air quality on Buncrana Main Street has been deemed ‘satisfactory’ by an asbestos specialist following this week’s major fire.
Both the Buncrana Plaza venue and John Barr’s drapery shop were destroyed in the blaze which broke out after 9pm on Sunday 3th February.
There were concerns in the town over airborne asbestos arising from the burning buildings at Upper Main Street.
Donegal County Council has today confirmed that there are no risks to public health regarding air quality.
A spokesperson said: “An asbestos specialist visited the area surrounding the scene of the fire on Monday afternoon.
“He advised that the Main Street could be reopened on Monday afternoon, however, Ferris Lane, Bothar Mhuire and the adjacent back lane should remain closed until debris removal is completed.
“Air monitoring assessments were carried out in the area on Tuesday morning and the results confirmed that air quality in the area is satisfactory.”
