A Donegal county councillor has urged people to support nurses across Donegal today in their efforts to get increased pay.
Cllr Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig said he was backing the striking nurses all the way in their pay claims.
He said “I support the nurses’ strike. Not just because they do important work, day and night, week in, week out, dealing with our communities’ health problems.
“Not just because they deserve to be paid properly after doing a degree before they qualify. Not just because they and other frontline staff bore the brunt of public service cuts after the banks collapsed and we got left with their debts.
“Not just because the government can justify an extra €1 billion and more for a building that nurses are going to be working in, but threaten to dock striking nurses’ wages.
“Not just because they found the money to pay bondholders in Anglo Irish Bank €267 million in December, but say they can’t afford to meet the demands of the nurses for a decent living wage.”
He added that in many ways the nurses are fighting for us when they demand that the government pay them a decent wage.
And he added that for too long, the Government has told us there is no money in the coffers, yet they always find money to support multinational corporations, even going so far as to spend money on a court case to get out of taking billions in taxes from Apple.
He said “They always find money to give tax breaks to their developer cronies while refusing to invest in public housing.
“The nurses can win this battle with the support of our communities and we can bring down this corrupt government with the support of people.
“The nurses have called a major rally in Dublin this Saturday to show that they have the people’s support for a fair wage.
“I hope to be at that rally and I hope as many of you as possible can make it as well.
People power can bring this government to its knees.”
