Blaine Mulligan recalled the early days of managing girls’ teams at Coláiste Ailigh as he savoured the moment following yesterday’s Ulster U20 final win over Thornhill College.
Shannon Ní Chunneagáin (2-4) led the way, Laoise Ní Riain hit two goals, while Aoife Ní Chearáin and Áine Ní Fhlannagáin – the player of the match – weighed in with goals,
“It’s a savage achievement,” Mulligan said.
“I started taking girls football six years ago. One of our first games was against Thornhill.
“It was a senior D competition and they absolutely walloped us. It was an eye-opener. Here we are, six years later, playing in an Under-20 ‘C’ and we’ve won it.”
Mulligan hailed the effort of his team after their big win, which puts them into an All-Ireland semi-final.
He said: “They have all rose their levels and it was really nice to see. We have a tiny population, 130 girls, and they have 1,500.
“They work so hard. They train so hard. They’re a credit to the school.”
