Donegal students are proudly returning to schools across the county today with certificates and awards from the 55th BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.
Local pupils enjoyed significant success at last week’s event, with 21 projects on display from nine schools in Donegal. There were two Special Award winners and three Category Award winners from the county.
Coláiste Ailigh Letterkenny student Oisín Ó Fearáin won the BT- Best Project in Irish Special Award for his study into: Staidéar ar cén glúin in Éirinn atá is gníomhach agus is eolach faoi athrú aeraide
Oisín also won Intermediate Individual 3rd place in the Social and Behavioural Sciences category.

The HP “Innovation4Good” Award was won by St Eunan’s College pupil Leo Camacho. Leo impressed the judges with his work on ‘Making Social Media a Better Place Using Artificial Intelligence’. Leo also took home the Intermediate Individual 1st place award in Technology.

Ciara Gilmore from Carndonagh Community School was the winner of the Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences Junior Individual 3rd place award.
Ciara put her thinking cap on to answer an age-old question: Will white wine remove red wine stains from clothing? She then investigated into the reaction which occurs when white wine is rubbed into a red wine stain.

The overall winner of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition was Adam Kelly, aged 17, a 5th year student from Skerries Community College. Adam took home the top prize for his project entitled “Optimizing The Simulation Of General Quantum Circuits”.

A study of Magalev trams, which can travel as fast as airplanes, was the basis for the entry of pupils of Magh Ene College, Bundoran at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition at the RDS. Independent MEP Marian Harkin was a visitor to the project and discussed it with (L to R):- Niamh Carolan and Emma Birney.

Coláiste Ailigh’s Clodagh Ní Chonchúir is congratulated by school principal Micheál Ó Giobúin on her success at the BT Young Scientist. Clodagh was highly commended for her project on using saliva to diagnose dehydration. Also in photo are fellow students who also represented the school at the prestigious event.
