A Garda investigation has been launched after thousands of euro of damage was caused to cars at a private house in Donegal on Christmas night.

The attacked happened in the normally quiet coastal village of Burtonport.

Two new cars and a car trailer were damaged in the deliberate attack.

A total of ten tyres were slashed and mirrors broken off the cars as well as other damage at the private dwelling house while the family slept inside the house.

A Garda forensic team carried out a full examination of the scene this afternoon.

Gardai have appealed for anybody with any information to contact them.
