Donegal and one of the county’s top hotels have earned places on the Reader Travel Awards shortlist for 2019.
It’s ‘Destination Donegal’ for many voters who nominated the county as one of the most popular places for domestic holidays in Ireland.
Donegal was in the top five spots for a ‘Home Holiday’ in this year’s Irish Independent Reader Travel Awards.
While often hailed as a ‘hidden gem’ Donegal was ranked beside the major destinations Cork, Galway, Kerry and Wexford.
It seems that tourist highlights and hospitality in Donegal are enjoyed as much by locals as they are by international visitors. Glenveagh National Park was the 20th top fee-charging attraction in Ireland last year, according to Failte Ireland, while Malin Head Viewing Point and Sliabh Liag Cliffs made to the top 21 list of best free attractions in the country.

Also on the Reader Travel Awards shortlist is Harvey’s Point, which has been nominated for the ‘Best Irish Welcome’ award.
The luxury hotel, on the shores of Lough Eske, is known for giving a warm welcome to guests from home and from all over the world. Harvey’s Point is currently ranked in second place on TripAdvisor’s list of the Top 25 Hotels in Ireland.
The Reader Travel Award winners will be revealed on Independent.ie on 19th January 2019.
