What a week it has been for Mona McSharry in the Irish Short-Course Swimming Championships in Antrim.
The Sligo native, who trains out of Marlin Swimming club in Ballyshannon, broke the 100-metre freestyle record twice in one day.
To start things off, on Thursday, McSharry broke her own 50m Freestyle record in the heats with a time of 25.03 seconds, three-hundredths of a second off her previous personal best.
McSharry subsequently took gold in the final with a time of 25.22, while she also was victorious in the 200m Individual Medley with a time of 2:12.76.
The teenager continued to impress on Friday, as she smashed the 100m freestyle with a time of 54.65 – a record that stood since 1995 with a time of 54.87.
And just to make sure it wasn’t luck, McSharry broke her own record, claiming gold, by shaving another three-tenths of a second off her earlier time.
Speaking to RTE on Friday, McSharry said: “I’m over the moon, I’m so happy,” the Sligo swimmer said afterwards. “This morning to have got that record when it was 23-years-old was absolutely amazing.
“54 seconds is a fast time and I didn’t think I’d get it. To be able to go even faster tonight and be even closer to a 53 is amazing. I’m just feeling great.”
