Deputy Pearse Doherty has urged all TDs to back his party’s proposed legislation on a Microgeneration Support Scheme.
Commenting on the Bill which was debated in the Dáil last night, the Donegal TD said that the legislation, if enacted, will enable householders to receive payments in return for surplus electricity which they generate on site and feed into the electricity grid.
Speaking following last night’s debate in the Dáil chamber, the Sinn Fein Deputy said “The significance of this bill cannot be overstated and I was delighted to be able to support it as it came before the Dáil last night.
“This piece of legislation, if enacted, has the potential to reduce energy bills for countless households across this state.
“It provides a payment to householders for small-scale renewable electricity feeding the mains grid from small-scale renewable energy; such as from rooftop solar panels.
“Moreover, this state is failing to meet its obligation with respect to climate change and emissions reduction targets, with households here currently producing 60% more emissions than the EU average.”
The Bill will help aid the growth of an alternative renewable energy source to fossil fuels, thus lowering our dependency on them.
“Similarly, this initiative will have the effect of reducing costs for electricity customers.
“I’m also pleased that the objectives set out in this bill have received the backing of organizations such as Friends of the Earth, Stop Climate Chaos, An Taisce and Trócaire to name a few.
“I am therefore delighted to support this important piece of legislation, and I am calling on government and all members of this House to accept and support this Bill as it passes through the various stages.”
