The Parish Priest of the Church of the Irish Martyrs has asked Irish Water to consider rescheduling works outside the church at their busiest time of the year.
Works on the Letterkenny Sewerage Scheme are due to begin on the Gortlee Road this December.
However, there are fears that the roadworks will limit access to the Church of Irish Martyrs over the Christmas period.
The scheduled start date of the project is 3rd December – the day after the beginning of the Advent season.
Fr Quinn said he has asked Irish Water to take the needs of the church community into account and hopes that works could be rescheduled to January 2019.
Fr Quinn said: “We have the most amount of people in the whole year coming through our doors in December. We just want people to be able to come and go easily.
“Irish Water were in contact with me 10 days ago to notify of the plans. I asked them to defer until January, but I know it is unlikely as the contracts are already signed.
“I understand this is work that has to be done. I just asked if they might consider doing it in January rather than December,” he said.
Fr Quinn said the church has a busy Christmas programme from the 8th December Feast Day to New Year’s Day, which includes the children’s Mass, Carol Services, Reconciliation Services, etc.
Irish Water has said that works will stop on public roads at key locations in Letterkenny from mid-November to mid-January to accommodate the Christmas period.
Fr Quinn has expressed his hope that Irish Water will consider the church to be one such key location and is awaiting a reply from the company this week.
