Over 50,000 in Ireland were caught using their phone behind the wheel in the past two years.
Many of the distracted drivers were taking selfies, according to Garda figures.
The Irish Daily Mail reveals that the dangerous habit is linked to drivers using social media, live streaming and taking photos on the road.
The figure reveals that Gardaí catch up to 68 drivers per day on their mobiles.
Some 28,400 Fixed Charge Notices were issued for the offence of using a mobile phone while driving last year. There were 22,433 fines issued up to September this year already.
Just nine drivers were prosecuted and three people convicted since new regulations over mobile phone use and texting while driving were brought in four years ago.
In a recent poll, one in four motorists admitted to scrolling through sites like Facebook and Twitter while behind the wheel.
