Donegal County Council has received funding from the Office of Public Works to examine a number of areas with coastal erosion around the county.
The following are the areas of the County Donegal coastline for evaluation:
1. Gweebarra Bay (examining the coast from Portnoo pier, Narin Beach, Gweebarra Bay, Dooey Beach)
2. Maghery (examining the coastline from the coast road either side of the beach itself)
3. Inishfree Bay (Examining the entire Carrickfinn Peninsula)
4. Magheroarty (Examining the coastline from Currans Port, Magheroarty Beach, Ballyness bay to the end of Drumnatinney beach)
These coastlines are of high conservation value because of the extensive areas of relatively unspoilt coastal habitats and the range of plant and animal species that these habitats support.
These catchment areas are idyllic locations for bird watching and ecological activities having a wide diversity of both plant and animal species.
Tender documents are now being prepared to appoint a consultant to conduct the survey work.
The funding has been welcomed by County Councillor Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig.
