People across the county have been swamped with fake texts offering tax rebates.
The texts pretend to be from the Revenue Commissioners office and even include the actual amount a person is due back in tax.
The text then takes people to a link where they are asked to fill out a form which includes sensitive personal information.
Thousands of people across Donegal are currently filling in and returning their annual tax forms and the scam is believed to be designed to confuse the public into thinking it is a legitimate text from Revenue.
Michael Coll of leading local tax advisers The Tax Clinic, which has offices in Letterkenny and Killybegs, said people should not be tempted to click into the texts.
He warned “The Revenue Commissioners never send emails or text messages requiring customers to send personal information via email or text.
“Anyone who receives an email or text purporting to be from Revenue should simply delete it.
“Anyone who provided personal information in response to these fraudulent emails or text messages should contact their bank or credit card company immediately.”
