A well-known Letterkenny man going back to the ‘radical’ 80s era for a disco to raise money for his Multiple Sclerosis therapy.
Tommy Halligan (51) has been living with MS for 13 years.
The former local DJ has previously benefited from the kindness of the community in fundraising for an operation in Poland.
At the time, Tommy’s MS had progressed so much that his speech, eyesight and mobility were all affected. The operation gave him a new lease on life.
Tommy said: “My speech was so bad that it was like I was drunk all the time. The operation gave me my speech and eyesight back. I got my walking back for two years, now it’s worse than ever. I wouldn’t be able to leave the house now without a wheelchair.”
Tommy currently travels to Sligo for oxygen therapy and appointments with a specialist doctor. But, with no funding for his transport, the cost of the weekly trips adds up.
Tommy said: “The oxygen chamber in Sligo involves breathing pure oxygen. It’s much better than what you breathe outside or in your home.
“Sligo isn’t far away but I have to travel every Monday. I have to pay for someone to drive my car, cover the petrol and other costs of a day away. It doesn’t come cheaper than €100,” he explained.
A close friend of Tommy’s has decided to organise a disco in aid of his therapy fund. They do not have a set money target to reach, but their main motto is that ‘every little helps’.
Tommy used to DJ at 80s disco nights in Neros, now called the Pulse, and proudly introduced techno to Donegal. Therefore, a fun night of music was decided as a perfect party theme to support him.
The 80s/Fancy Dress disco takes place this Friday 2nd November 2018 from 10pm-late in the Station House Hotel Letterkenny. This is an adults disco.
Admission is only €5 and there will be spot prizes kindly sponsored by local businesses. Spot prizes sponsored by: Station House Hotel, Narrow Quarter Bistro, Kerrykeel, Greenes Shoes, Evolve Menswear, The Suit Room /County Seat, Watson Menswear, Mc Cullaghs Jewellers, SHINE Hairdressers and friends of Tommy’s.
The event is an opportunity for people to get a second use out of their Halloween costumes and enjoy a great night dancing to the best 80s hits. DJ Paul McGlynn will be taking care of the playlist this time and Tommy is full of praise for his pal’s music skills.
Everyone is welcome to get their neons and legwarmers on and join in this disco in aid of Tommy’s treatment.
