A housing and homeless protest will be staged tomorrow in the heart of Letterkenny, leading from the Station Roundabout up to the Market Square.
The Donegal Homeless & Housing Coalition have urged people to turn out in their numbers in support of being against the housing crisis, which they say has been ‘going on for over a decade’.
The Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government recorded 26 people as homeless in Donegal in February 2018, but the Housing Coalition says they reject those claims.
Allie Gallagher, a representative of the coalition, said: ‘The system is broken. It’s wrong, it’s inhumane and needs to be stamped out completely.
“There are thousands of houses lying empty across this island that would solve the housing and homeless crisis and it’s time we unite together to make our feelings clear to the local council and national government.
“We are not willing to sit back any longer and watch people suffer at the hands of the establishment which includes the elderly and young children.”
Fellow Coalition representative, Finn O Donnell says homelessness affects so many more people in Donegal than the County Council asserted.
“The Council have stated that there are 26 people homeless in the county. This does not include couch surfers, those living in emergency accommodation or those forced to live in cramped, confined and unsuitable conditions.”
The protest will take place from 2pm on Saturday from the Letterkenny Station Roundabout.
