Judge orders more compo from man who knocked out boxer’s career

October 23, 2018

A Judge has ordered a man who KO’d a boxer’s promising career following a vicious attack to pay him more compensation.

Dean Hanlon, aged 22, attacked Matthew Hanlon while both were socialising at the Lagoon Bar in Termon, Co Donegal.

Matthew Hanlon suffered serious injuries when he was jumped on by Hanlon and another man.

As well as swelling and bruising to his left eye, he suffered a fractured nasal bone and a soft tissue injury to his jaw.

Matthew Hanlon was due to represent Ulster in a boxing tournament against a team from Boston at the time of the assault in 2015.

He revealed the attack on December 20th, 2014, put his boxing career on the ropes.

“I had to leave boxing…I withdrew as a result of the injuries,” he told Judge Paul Kelly.

“My nose is bent stupid. I have anxiety and depression and I had a fractured jaw and cheekbone.”

Photos of the injuries suffered by Matthew Hanlon were handed to the Judge.

Gardai said that ‘a number of words’ were exchanged before the injured party was assaulted with a ‘punch on the head and body’.

Solicitor Patsy Gallagher said his client had already paid €600 of €1,000 compensation recommended by the court.

Hanlon, of Dooen, Newmills, Letterkenny, then appeared in court with his mother and the balance of the initial compensation was paid.

“He is remorseful,” Mr Gallagher said.

Judge Kelly previously said the offer was an ‘insult’ to Matthew Hanlon and that Dean Hanlon should have ‘known better’ than to interject in such a manner.

He adjourned the case until November 26th to see what other proposals could be made by Hanlon to his victim.
