Pearse Doherty has called on the Irish public to elect a new President of Ireland later this month in the October 26 election.
Sinn Féin’s Finance Spokesperson, Deputy Pearse Doherty added that Ireland is in transition and believes that MEP Liadh Ní Riada is the ideal candidate with the right energy, enthusiasm and vision to lead Ireland through this time of change.
Doherty said that Brexit posed ‘particular challenges’ for Ireland’s future and increased the likelihood of a united Ireland.
The Donegal TD, who has been selected as Director of Election for the presidential hopeful’s race for the Áras, was speaking ahead of this weekend’s Donegal launch of her campaign for the presidency which will take place in Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair this Saturday, October 6.
Deputy Doherty said: “Ireland today is in transition and Brexit poses a particular challenge to our political and constitutional future.
“Increasingly the prospect, shape and nature of a united Ireland will be a feature of public discussion and political decision making.
“And the past seven years have seen the disappearance of a lot of the of old certainties, while more and more people are seeking to build a new, progressive and inclusive Ireland.
“In Europe, Liadh has been a strong voice representing Irish interests on various issues as an MEP, and I firmly believe that Liadh will bring the same energy, drive and enthusiasm to the office of President.
“As President, Liadh wants to use the office to initiate an inclusive citizens’ conversation on a future united Ireland, one in which no one is left behind or forgotten.
“The theme of Liadh’s campaign is ‘A New President for a New Ireland’, and it outlines the need for a new vision to overcome the social and economic inequalities being faced by some many today.
“Moreover, Liadh is the first person from the Gaeltacht to ever contest a presidential election, and she is committed to giving a voice to the Gaeltacht regions which have long been marginalized over the years, including here in Donegal.”
