Scoil Adhamhnáin an Luinnigh in Derrybeg has been granted additional funding for emergency improvement works.
The major project is necessary for an extension to the six-teacher school, to fix dampness in classrooms and for roof repairs.
Fianna Fáil Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher Leas Cheann Comhairle and Sinn Féin Deputy Pearse Doherty have jointly welcomed the additional funding allocation.
They said the previous approval by the Department of Education in April of this year was inadequate to cover the complete costs of the necessary works.
“We both wish to acknowledge the contribution and leadership of the School Board of Management and the school staff who have lobbied intensely and worked closely with both of us in securing and delivering this project’s final approval today,” the Donegal deputies said in a joint statement.
Pat the Cope added that funding approval is subject to the Scoil Adhamhnáin an Luinnigh school authorities submitting the final costs for the entire project.
“Once these final costings are submitted by the school, then the Department will sanction the complete overall works plus the additional expenditure granted by the Department through our representation,” said Deputies Pearse Doherty and Pat the Cope.
“The Department of Education have confirmed that the documentation submitted has been examined by the Department’s Professional and Technical Teams, based on their recommendation approval is hereby granted to extend the GP Room which will remove the main source of dampness and provide a more suitably sized GP room for a six teacher school. The necessary roof repairs should also be undertaken as part of these works. “
“These improvements when complete will make a significant improvement to the school and are much needed.
“It is essential that we as a state continue to invest heavily in our education system, so that every best opportunity can be given to our future generations to progress and development in their school years,” concluded Deputies Pearse Doherty and Pat the Cope.
