A physically dominant Glenfin emphatically saw off Naomh Brid in Mountcharles on Saturday evening to reach the Intermediate Championship semi-finals.
Glenfin 1-11 Naomh Brid 1-4
The games early encounters had struck a dead heat with both teams fairly competitive, Callum Gallagher and Declan McCafferty on the scoresheet early for Naomh Brid.
It didn’t take long for Glenfin to get their own game rolling as goalkeeper Andrew Walsh and Daniel McGlynn laid down a marker for the Pairc Taobhoige outfit.
Glenfin played into the wind in the first half establishing the framework for this a gritty quarter-final victory after 20 minutes when Stephen Carr pounced a dropped ball – it was the first of many Naomh Brid’s defensive mistakes – and it gave Glenfin a 1-2 to 0-2 advantage.
With Glenfin talisman, Frank McGlynn, off the field with a nosebleed, Glenfin showed some of their best football, moving the ball superbly at times.
Conor Ward had the final score before the interval of the half for Glenfin after Ryan Brogan added another point for Naomh Brid.
In the second half, Naomh Brid’s plan went totally out the window as they were limited to only two scores – Darragh Brogan providing a lonely point after 47 minutes, while Lee Doherty finished off a brilliantly worked move by Brid finding the back of the net, making it a three-point game.
However, Glenfin took real charge from there and McGlynn reintroduction proved crucial as the Red and White posted five more scores through Shane Carr, Gary Dorrian and Gerard Ward.
It was a well-deserved victory for Glenfin on the day, but Naomh Brid will rue their consistent wides, which could’ve saw them have a bigger say on the outcome of the game.
