Donegal Donkey Sanctuary is seeking help via financial donation or hay, straw and haylage donations in order to meet their upcoming winter feed costs.
Last winter was extremely long and wet which meant that the cost of an extended period of winter feeding was very high at the sanctuary.
Grazing in the paddocks was only possible at the end of May and was closely followed by the heatwave which saw temperatures rise to thirty degrees plus.
While this weather is welcomed by most people it was catastrophic for grass-growth as many farmers will testify and yet again donkeys had to be fed hay & haylage instead of grazing freely.
The sanctuary is currently home to 93 donkeys, with nine having arrived over the last week alone. Six recent arrivals were taken from situations where they were due to be euthanized (put to sleep) within days as no homes could be found for them.
These animals had been seized by certain authorities from severe cruelty but sadly their future could not be secured by their rescuers due to lack of facilities.
Without Donegal Donkey Sanctuary’s offer of a safe home, they would have ended their short lives by lethal injection.
Could you organize a coffee morning with your friends and family or maybe organize a ‘dress down’ day at work or a ‘no uniform’ day at school? No donation is too small.
A gofundme link https://www.gofundme.com/winter-feed-bedding-appeal has been set up on the sanctuary Facebook page as the most convenient way to donate so please give what you can to assist with this important animal welfare work.
If anyone is fortunate enough to have surplus feed or bedding that they could donate please contact the sanctuary on 087 2199977.
