A student at Letterkenny’s Institute of Technology got the first day at college of to the perfect start after he scooped €5,000 on a lotto scratchcard.
The student, understood to be a first year, was buying lunch at Tobin’s Service station which is next door to the college.
The young man was left utterly gobsmacked when he scratched the lotto ticket and realised he had just won €5,000.
Staff at the popular store could not change the ticket for cash but urged him to go to the local post office to claim his cash.
President of the LYIT student’s union Paul Lynch said he was delighted for the student and wished them all the best.
“I hadn’t heard to be honest but I’m so delighted for them. I hope they spend it wisely,” he laughed.
A spokesman for the national lottery said they would not be made aware of the win as only the winners of tickets worth €15,000 or more would have to call to lottery offices to collect their prize.
The spokesman added “It’s obviously not one of our bigger prizes but it’s great news to hear, especially for a young student on their first day at college.”
