A group of anti-abortion campaigners staged a vocal protest at one of the Taoiseach’s engagements today in Inishowen.
Few could miss the large banner draped across the new Cockhill Bridge as Taoiseach Leo Varadkar attended the official opening of the structure on Tuesday afternoon.
Campaigners had also assembled along the road on the Taoiseach’s route to the bridge with red banners sharing their message.
Signs were displayed at the bridge opening and one protester with a megaphone threatened to interrupt speeches by Donegal Councillors and the Taoiseach as they welcomed the new €3million infrastructure to Buncrana.
The campaigner shouted ‘Go home Varadkar, you’re not welcome in Donegal’, ‘You’re a disgrace’ and other direct criticisms relating to the passing of the May 25th Referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment.
At one point in the event, the protester called to the Taoiseach: “Will you cut the ribbon on abortion clinics too?”
In his speech, Cllr Seamus Ó Domhnaill said: “It is a big occasion to have our Taoiseach, the leader of the country in our county. Politics aside, it is important that when we have the leader of our government coming to our country that he is afforded the respect and the cooperation of all of the people. We want you to enjoy the occasion of coming to Donegal.
“We want to ensure that you are always welcome and we want to particularly assure that you will keep delivering and giving us money that we can deliver projects on time, and on cost, that are badly needed for Donegal.”
