Two public meetings have been announced in North West Donegal for locals to form plans in a bid to save their post offices.
This follows the announcement that 17 post offices in Donegal have been listed for consolidation under An Post’s re-networking scheme.
Local residents and business owners in Gortahork and Dunfanaghy are invited to attend public meetings to have their say over the future of their local postal services.
The meetings will take place on Monday 17th of Sept in Óstán Loch Altan in Gortahork at 7pm and another is scheduled for Friday 21st of Sept in the Ozanam Centre in Dunfanaghy.
In a joint statement, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr. Seamus Ó Domhnaill and Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District Cllr John Sheamuis Ó Fearraigh said:
“Having met with local residents and business owners in both villages over recent days, it’s clear that there is deep opposition to these planned closures and what is seen as a future attack on rural Ireland and the removal of local services.
“This is why we have organised these public meetings next week to allow the local communities in Gortahork and Dunfanaghy the opportunity to come together, to have their voices heard and to devise a strategy on how best to mount a campaign to retain these local post office branches.
“We would of course encourage as many people as possible to make a special effort to come along on Monday 17th and Friday 21st and attend these public meetings where the communities in both Gortahork and Dunfanaghy can work together and show both the government and the company that the people of these villages will not simply stand idly by and watch local services be removed like this.
“In the days and weeks ahead, we look forward to working closely with communities throughout the west of the county where the local post office now faces a similar threat to its future, and we pledge to continue to work with all stakeholders to try and retain what is a vital local service.”
The 17 Co. Donegal post offices on the consolidation list are: Ballyliffin, Ballymagan, Brinlack, Bunbeg, Burnfoot, Burtonport, Church Hill, Culdaff, Culkeeny, Dunaff, Dunfanaghy, Dunkineely, Gortahork, Kindrum, Meenaneary, Quigley’s Point, Rossnakill.
