If you haven’t heard about the movie ‘Black 47’, you’re sure to hear about it this weekend as cinemagoers get caught up in the drama of the Irish Famine epic.
Black 47 is a revenge tale set during one of the grimmest eras of Irish history. The plot is action-packed and powerful, as the narrative follows a hardened Irish Ranger on a violent mission to avenge his family.
Locally, you can catch the film in Eclipse Cinemas Lifford/Strabane, Eclipse Bundoran and Century Cinemas in Letterkenny.
The film is set in Connemara, but it has some close Donegal connections. Ballyshannon actor Ronan O’Connor makes his big screen debut as Red, who is a “Young Irelander” who gets captured and interrogated by Hannah, played by Hugo Weaving (Lord of the Rings, The Matrix).
Patrick O’Neill, also from Ballyshannon, had a main role as Distributor of the film through Wildcard – a company he set up with the filmmakers of Black 47. Wildcard are responsible for releasing the film in cinemas across Ireland this week.
Patrick is also an Associate Producer on Black 47. His brother Rossa O’Neill worked as a location manager for the film, which was shot in Connemara, Kildare and Wicklow.
Black 47 is directed by Lance Daly, whose previous films include Life’s a Breeze, which premiered at Toronto Film Festival. The film stars multi-award winning actor Hugo Weaving and Jim Broadbent, alongside James Frecheville and Stephen Rea.
Black 47 is a must-see on the big screen, Distributor Patrick O’Neill tells Donegal Daily:
“Black 47 is the first Irish film ever to be set during the famine, and as well as a fascinating insight into life at that time, it’s also quite a thrilling action film that can be enjoyed by all ages.
“The filmmakers have made Black 47to be seen on the big screen, and we’re delighted to be bringing it to all cinemas in Donegal this week.”
